John Schlitt is known for his career as the lead singer of Christian rock band Petra the band regarded as the pioneers of the Christian rock and contemporary Christian music genre. Throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s, Petra was one of the world's most popular Christian rock bands, with each of its albums during that period selling hundreds of thousands of copies while the band sold out arenas and regularly placed songs at the top of Christian radio charts. Selling nearly 10 million records while being nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning four, and winning 10 Dove Awards Petra was the first rock band inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the first Christian band whose memorabilia was included in the Hard Rock Cafe restaurant chain.
Prior to joining Petra in 1986, Schlitt was the lead vocalist for Head East. When Head East’s single "Never Been Any Reason" began to attract radio attention, A&M Records signed the band and re-released Flat as a Pancake in June 1975. The singles "Never Been Any Reason" and "Love Me Tonight" became pop chart hits, and the album spent six months on the charts, eventually going gold. The single, "Never Been Any Reason", was featured in the 2005 movie adaptation of Clive Cussler's novel, Sahara, and appears on the soundtrack to the 1993 coming-of-age drama Dazed and Confused as well as being briefly heard in the film. The song has also been used on TV's That '70s Show and Friday Night Lights. In 2011, Head East was inducted into the Iowa Rock n' Roll Music Association's Hall of Fame.
